Hotel Telegrafo, La Habana Vieja, Cuba

The Hotel Telégrafo once located on Amistad street worked since the year 1860. Located hemming the Campo de Marte, one of the then campuses for military practices . Around the year 1888 it moved to one of the most crowded corners of all times in the city, formed by the streets of Prado and Neptuno where this traditional hotel stands to its present day.

Seven years later the marriage conceived between the then very well known merchant couple of Don Guillermo del Toro y Doña Pilar Samoano who acquired this real state contributed to making several changes to the previous hotel. Another story was added to the original building and the surrounding covered porch that remains to our days. This couple turned the Hotel Telégrafo into one of eleven best hotels of Latin America with updated services and outstanding reputation.

This authentic and luxurious hotel goes back in time to remind us the paradigm of the hotel it used to be during the XIX century. Its eclepctical facade reveals today the architectural evolution of the hotel. Its original conception goes back to the first two stories that were the prelude for the third story making it look a more contemporaneous building. Sixty-three spacious rooms of high buttresses installed along the three room stories provide the view over the whole Prado Promenade . Its inner sites discover the ruins of the main central patio where the snack-bar is located. Its big half arcades without plaster reveal bricks and masonry which contrasts with the modern design of the hotel. It has a big ceramic mural, in the form of a collage showing elements of Havana colonial architecture and the fountain which magnify the patio and its surrounding old ruins. The international restaurant is located on the ground floor of the building. Its decorations with contemporaneous furniture transmit a classic atmosphere to the open halls lighted by stained glasses.

El Hotel Telegrafo funcionó desde el año 1860 ubicado en la calle Amistad, con su fachada mirando hacia el Campo de Marte, destinado a prácticas militares de aquel entonces. Alrededor del año 1888 se trasladó a una de las esquinas más concurridas de la cudad, esta formada por las calles de Prado y Neptuno, para quedarse definitivamente en la edificación que ocupa hoy este hotel.

Siete años después, el matrimonio confrontado por Don Guillermo del Toro y Doña Pilar Samoano, reconocidos comerciantes, destacados en el negocio hotelero de la época, adquieren el inmueble para realizarle importantes cambios. Auténtico y lujoso, el telégrafo regresa para recordarnos al paradigmático hotel que fuera a fines del siglo XIX. Su ecléctica fachada descubre hoy la evolución arquitectónica que tuvo en el tiempo. Dos primeros niveles que respetan su concepción original constituyen el preludio para los pisos superiores, muestra de una idea much más cotemporánea. Sesenta y tres espaciosas estancias de altos puntales, instaladas en tres pisos habitacionales, proporcionan la vista sobre todo el Paseo del Prado. Sus visuales interiores descubren las ruinas del patio central donde se encuentra situado el snack-bar. Grandes arcadas de medio punto y carpaneles destapadas muestran sus ladrillos y mampostería para contrastar con el resto de su moderno diseño. Un gran mural cerámico a la manera de collage, que detalla elementos de la arquitectura colonial habanera, y un burbujeante espejo de agua magnifican el patio interior. Con una entrada independiente a la principal del hotel, donde se encuentra su moderno lobby, su magnífico restaurante de cocina internacional. Su decoración con un mobiliario contemporáneo transmite un ambiente clásico a los amplios espacios iluminados por vitrales.
