The main attractions here are scuba diving in the open sea and in saltwater-flooded caves linked to the system of lakes on the Zapata Peninsula, in southern Matanzas Province. Dives are made directly from the coast, because samples of the most beautiful species of coral-Elkhorn (Acropora palmata), Brain (Diploria spp.), Leaf (Agaricia unifasciata), Star (Montastraea spp.) and Flower (Eusmilia fastigiata) and many other kinds are close to shore, together with Common Sea Fans (Gorgonia spp.) and large numbers of multicolored fish. Farther out, the seabed drops abruptly, forming a wall to which sponges, gorgonians and many types of coral are attached.
The Bay of Pigs is just under 53 miles (85 kilometers) from Cienfuegos, 110 miles (177 kilometers) from Havana and 65 miles (105 kilometers) from Varadero. It has its own lodgings, where tourists visiting the great natural attractions of the largest swamplands in the Caribbean also stay.
